Maryville College was host to the first annual GLIMPSE Conference the weekend of November 22, where more than 40 black students from Tennessee Wesleyan, Maryville College, Pellissippi State Technical Community College, Lincoln Memorial University and Berry College gathered. GLIMPSE (Gathering Listening Igniting Mending Persevering Surviving Empowering) was inspired by the spirit of Ubuntu, an African humanist philosophy, which states that we are human only through the humanity of other human beings. This spirit resonated throughout the weekend as students shared their histories with each other and formed a sense of kinship and common purpose.
TWC was represented by Jarvis Moore, a junior from LaGrange, Georgia, and Willie Rucker, a junior from
Chattanooga. In addition to the spirit of change, students also enjoyed the conferences’ fellowship component. “I enjoyed meeting people, networking, and being able to voice my opinion,” said Moore. Rucker and Moore commented that the conference was uplifting and inspirational.
The TWC Student Government Association sponsored Moore and Rucker to attend the conference.
