Have you walked on the crosswalk by the gymnasium and almost get hit by a car? If so, how does that make you feel? Does it make you feel invincible because you have yet to get hit by a car? Hope¬fully, you are concerned for your safety. If you are concerned about whether you will get hit going to or from classes, then here are some tips in order to keep yourself safe and cautious given to Mrs. Marsha Zaleta from the Public Works Department of Athens.
• When approaching the crosswalk, DO NOT stand in front of the in¬frared bollards unless you are ready to cross.
• Avoid using any cellular devices or music devices; you need to keep your eyes and ears open as you cross the street.
• DO NOT step onto the crosswalk until you see that you have an adequate gap in traf-fic or all four lanes of vehicles have stopped COMPLETELY.
• On bad weather days (ice, snow, etc.) allow enough time for vehicles to stop.
• DO NOT run, for you may trip.
I’m sure all of you have felt a draft up the back your shirt from a vehicle that zooms right by, or you had to jump back because they either did not see you. Or, perhaps they were traveling too fast to stop. When interviewed about what most worries her as she crosses the road, Brittany Verner answered, “[I’m worried about] getting sideswiped by an automobile that couldn’t see you crossing because of another vehicle.” Just follow these simple steps and you will be safer each and every day!
yes, great tips, thanks for sharing.
great info. and thanks for sharing!
i was hit by a car 3 years ago.
the one thing i would like to add to your readers is…get eye contact with the driver of the car, or do not walk. that is the one thing that has been told to me over and over by both police & fire depts.
after being hit by a careless driver, experiencing the pain & recovery, i have missed a few lights because i have not made eye contact with the driver.
peace, crosswalkawareness
