As you may know, TWC’s Student Government Association is presently without a Vice President. As a result, we are having a special election on Tuesday the 15th and Wednesday the 16th in the SAC. Yay! Democracy! We have four candidates running for the position. The debates were held during the SGA meeting on Thursday the 10th. You might have missed them, but I didn’t! Don’t worry; I’ll let you in on what went down.
Brandon Gentry, Katie Hanley, Allen Leuthold, and Dylan Pogue are the four candidates who were involved in the debate. The candidates were posed several questions, the first of which was about the responsibilities of the SGA VP. Most everyone had the same answers. The Vice President’s major responsibilities are to report to the President, act in her absence, and act as an intermediary between SGA and the student body.
Next, the candidates were questioned about their specific goals as VP. Katie mentioned that she is interested with involving Tennessee Wesleyan in more philanthropies—specifically the Ronald McDonald House. Allen would like to see more involvement and representation of student groups within SGA. Dylan said he would like to see more organizations and a wider variety in them on campus. Brandon said that he would like get the commuters more involved in campus activities and also mentioned helping raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, since M.D. research presently costs around $80 per minute.
Next up was a question about what plans the candidates had to meet those goals. Allen said that he brings open-mindedness and would be a quality leader. Dylan would be available to the president, visible to the student body, and stated that he would like everyone to feel that TWC is their home throughout the school year. Brandon has plans to work with both faculty and students to increase involvement from both in school activities and SGA. Katie said that she would take steps to increase commuter involvement, such as trying to schedule things during school-wide breaks. The next question was about time management, which all four candidates said they felt they could handle the position.
So, now that you’ve the skinny, make an informed decision and vote. You really have no excuse, unless you’re a freshman. Sorry new guys, but you all can’t vote this time. Don’t be sad! You’ll get to vote at the end of this year. Besides, you guys weren’t even here when we voted for the VP the first time! Calm down! Everyone else, VOTE!
Just wanted to let people know that Allen Leuthold was elected SGA Vice-President for the 2009-10 school year. Congratulations.
We will be having a run-off on Tuesday, September 22 between Dylan Pogue and Allen Leuthold. This time, we will have two voting locations. Commuters will vote in the SAC and residents in the dining hall lobby from 11am-1:30. VOTE PEOPLE!!! (Unless you’re a freshmen, in which case, you’ll have to wait until spring.)
It’s good to see that all you SGA people are prejeduced against Freshman! Real nice, guys. Seriously, I’m just kidding. I don’t mind not voting. In fact, the prospect can be a bit unnerving. But it sounds like we’ve got a great SGA program here at TWC and when Freshmen can vote, I’ll most definitely do my part to stay involved!
Nice article, full of humor and information. Rock on.
Quit being a Freshman, then! (BOOSH!)
