“The Miracle Worker” tells the inspiring story of the trials and triumphs of Helen Keller, a woman who was born deaf and blind, yet overcame both of these handicaps and learned to read and communicate. The actors, actresses, production staff, and director all came together to put on a show that is definitely worth seeing and entertaining throughout its entire run.
The cast of the play is led by two beautiful, young actresses who both manage to convey the play’s emotional depth, while also adding comic relief into each of their roles. The play stars Madison Johnson as Helen and Mary Moates as Helen’s teacher Annie Sullivan. It is apparent to any audience member that both of these actresses embody the characteristics of the figures they are portraying, and the two have obviously formed the emotional attachment necessary to convey Helen and Annie’s relationship. The trust that the two main characters share shows the audience an amazing representation of the relationship that Helen and Annie truly shared. The two lead actresses have a huge responsibility and neither disappoint at any time during the play.
Along with the two main actresses, the audience is blessed with an extraordinary supporting cast. Everyone from the charming Dr. Pelley as Anagnos, to Jordan McClure portraying the adorable Percy plays a part in helping this touching story come to the stage. Assisting the cast is the exceptional production staff. Every set and costume change is accomplished smoothly and gracefully. All the elements combined, the play is truly a joy to watch.
“The Miracle Worker” is directed by Melonie Carideo and is playing at the Sue E. Trotter Black Box Theater at the Athens Art Center. Showtimes are through Saturday, September 19th, 2009.
