A new student organization was approved last Thursday, September 17, 2009. For the first time in the history of Tennessee Wesleyan College, we now have “The Community: a GLBST alliance”, which is a group dedicated to the promotion of tolerance of minority groups that has a special focus on promoting awareness of the varying sexual orientations within both the campus community and the surrounding region.
Serving as the officers of the charter group are Dylan Pogue as Chairperson, Maggie Wilson as Vice-Chair, Jon Heatherly as Public Relations and Outreach Coordinator, and Caleb Wimmer serving as a combined secretary, treasurer, and SGA representative.
Pogue stated a few key goals of the group would be to provide a sense of comfort to students who need it and to establish “safe zones” around campus. As for philanthropies, “The Community” will be dedicated to both the promotion of AIDs awareness and hate-crime prevention.
“Pogue stated a few key goals of the group would be to provide a sense of comfort to students who need it and to establish “safe zones” around campus.”
Dr. Douglas H. Manley - faculty advisor of the group - stated, “We are happy to have a welcoming organization of this nature on campus, and we look forward to serving both the Wesleyan and Athens constituents.”
When asked for the core idea of the group, Pogue quoted an anonymous author:
“This is not my choice. This is not forced upon me. This just is.”
He stresses that for those who need someone with which to talk or somewhere to go, you now have another option.
Great article! I’m really excited for you all!! =)
I’m really excited to be a part of this new group. Everyone feel free to inquire about or join the group as we are an inclusive organization.
