Wouldn’t it be nice to live to be one-hundred years old, or at least live a healthy balanced life? On September 24, 2009, Stephanie Huskey led one of the best convocations that I have been to this year. With her contagious laugh and high-spirited attitude, she set the mood for being fun.
Stephanie Huskey graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan in 2000, and is now an instructor of Exercise Science and Health here at TWC. As Stephanie spoke, one could tell that her words came from the heart, and that she really cares about TWC students.
“Your healthy lifestyle isn’t just being in shape. It’s spiritual, emotional, environmental, etc. Your lifestyle will be balanced by the healthy choices you make each and every day.”
Huskey spoke of a lifestyle in relation to health. Many statistics were given such as: 25% of your weight variability is based on genetics and 30% has to do with your lifestyle. Stephanie also presented us with ten ways to live to be a hundred:
- Don’t retire or stop being active.
- Floss daily; the bacteria in your mouth are linked to heart disease.
- Move around. Do something for at least thirty minutes every day.
- Eat a breakfast full of fiber.
- Get at least 6 hours of sleep every night.
- Eat whole foods instead of supplements.
- Be less neurotic and learn to “roll with the punches”.
- Live like a Seventh Day Adventist, and you will gain 10 years.
- Become a “creature of habit”. More specifically, set up a schedule and stick to it.
- Stay connected.
So there are the ten ways to live to be a hundred! Of course these are not a guarantee, but they certainly will improve your health and overall well-being.
Huskey also pointed out a valid point stating, “Your healthy lifestyle isn’t just being in shape. It’s spiritual, emotional, environmental, etc. Your lifestyle will be balanced by the healthy choices you make each and every day.”
Anyone who follows these helpful guidelines given by Ms. Huskey can live a healthy, balanced, productive life. Being healthy isn’t about just being in shape, it’s about who you are and how you’re living the life that God has given you. So stay healthy, but also stay balanced in yourself, your health, your studies, and in your everyday lives.
