What are the Bulldog Olympics? To the disappointment of dog-lovers, it is not an exhibition of pure bred dogs. In fact, it is an annual event sponsored by the Tennessee Wesleyan College Student Life office in which the student organizations on campus go head-to-head in a series of competitive, athletic events.
The event takes place on Rankin-Hudson Field near the sand volleyball courts on campus. Any student organization can participate. Cash prizes are awarded to the top three finishers. Events of the Olympics are the Tug-of-War, Three-Legged Race, Egg Toss, Eating Contest, Obstacle Course, Over-Under, and Chubby Bunny.
In the Tug-of-War, two teams of five demonstrate raw strength by trying to drag their opponents across a line. In the Three-Legged Race, a pair of racers try their speed and agility by racing across the field while having their legs tied to their partner’s. Other events, such as the Egg Toss, measure teamwork and communication. Hearty eaters should try the Eating contest, where participants eat as much as they can.
The Obstacle Course also challenges physical fitness; participants must be prepared to go the distance. Over-Under consists of five person teams passing an object over the first person and under the second person in the line. Maybe the most humorous event in the Olympics is the Chubby Bunny. One member of each organization fills his or her mouth with as many marshmallows as possible and says “chubby bunny.”
Not only are the Bulldog Olympics a way to win money for TWC organizations, but they also promote Bulldog spirit. This year’s Bulldog Olympics were postponed until this evening at either 6:00 p.m. in the Rankin Hudson field pending good weather, or 8:00 p.m. in the gymnasium if there is inclement weather.
