On Thursday, October 15, 2009, Townsend Auditorium was filled with music, dancing, and laughter as the 2009 Lip Sync progressed. Six groups participated in this monumental event, bringing a different kind of entertainment to the campus of Tennessee Wesleyan College.
The first team to go up was the Baptist Collegiate Ministries, or BCM. Their performance was inspiring and upbeat, filled with dancing and some awesome lip-syncing. The most memorable aspect about the BCM act was their look of absolute enjoyment as they did their routine. When asked what she liked most about doing the lip-sync, BCM member Annabeth Cunningham answered, “We just had so much fun. That’s all that matters.” A true example of what the BCM is all about, and their philosophy paid off, as they won third place in the contest.
Next up was the Natural Science Club, who had the audience in tears of laughter as they performed a routine to the song “You’re a Nerd”. Their costumes, mannerisms, and dancing were perfect for the song. The “nerds” were incredible–so funny! Their dance moves were true to the nature of a “nerd”, as well as their costumes. The audience laughed their approval and even “oohed” and “ahhed” when the science club conjured up a real, smoking, chemical combination.
The fraternity, Delta Zeta Phi, put on a stellar performance. What started out as a bunch of guys dressed up as nuns – swaying and dancing to a soft, slow tune – turned into a bunch of guys dressed in short skirts and cheetah-print shirts, dancing and syncing to Beyonce’s “All the Single Ladies”. Judging by the audience’s shrieks of laughter and screams of approval, this would not be an act one would easily forget.
Indeed it wasn’t, for Delta Zeta Phi won first place. When asked if they had anything to say about their victory, they collectively responded, “Awesome! Fourth year in a row!” They then proceeded to refer to themselves as “RAW”. Obviously this group of guys loved the spotlight and were not afraid to do what it took to win. This works for them, considering this is the fourth year running that they have come out on top.
A sorority did a wonderful rendition of “The Hoedown Throwdown” by Miley Cyrus. They were upbeat and enjoyed themselves, and they had the moves down to the last “zig-zag”. They were synchronized, but most of all, they just looked like they were having a great time.
The psychology club’s performance was literally a one-man show that personified a mime going through a series of complicated dance moves. It was definitely a feat worthy of an organization called the Psychology Club.
Finally came the dance team, who captured the audience with a perfectly-executed dance and song. They synced with amazing accuracy, and danced like they had been practicing for ages. Needless to say, the dance club claimed second place in the lip-syncing competition.
For anyone who missed this phenomenal event, it was a hilarious and awe-inspiring performance that left the crowd gasping, laughing, and applauding. An incredible lip-syncing experience, this was something that people are going to be talking about for a long time.
