Ashley Wilson, the president of our student government, is a very busy lady. In the span of only three years, she will have graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan while being involved in a large number of clubs and activities. I managed to get her to stop working long enough to speak with me for a bit.
I would like to be remembered for my work-ethic. A strong work-ethic is everything.
Ashley is a native of the area. She grew up in Etowah and graduated from Central High School. She is a senior History major with a minor in English. In her shorter than average time at TWC, she has still managed to be involved with quite a bit on campus. In addition to serving as our SGA President, Ashley is an RA in Wesley Commons, a member of the Student Activities Board, and involved in Sigma Kappa In addition, she attends BCM and the Criminal Justice club.
After graduating this May, she plans to attend law school. She says that her first choice is the University of Tennessee. Once she graduates from law school, she plans to work for a non-profit organization.
“Mission work has always been important to me. I’ve been on 7 mission trips within the States, and when I’m in a career I should have more opportunities to help. I’ll have more funds and better connections to more organizations.”
She hopes to work either with an organization to help Appalachian children in severely impoverished areas such as rural Kentucky, or to help with women in Asian countries who are dragged into the world of sex trafficking. As for political ambitions, Ashley says “I would only take a political position if it would help directly benefit my cause and the people I want to help.”
With all these duties and affiliations both on campus and off, it would seem that she could not possibly have any free time at all. Multi-tasking is her specialty – it would appear – and she freely admits to studying during movies and other designated fun times. “I’m a big UFC fan, most everyone who knows me will tell you that.” says Ashley. She’s also been a fan of the “Twilight” series since well before the movie was released. “I was a ‘Twilighter’ before Twilight was cool! That’s my claim to fame!” she jokes.
What would she truly like her claim to fame to be?
“I would like to be remembered for my work-ethic. A strong work-ethic is everything. You can be the most intelligent, talented person in the world; but without a good work ethic, you are nothing. If you are lazy, then you are basically nothing.”
As far as building a legacy goes, it seems that our President is already working hard on hers—both at TWC and beyond.
