Most of the holidays we celebrate are historical or religious dates. Independence Day, Veteran’s Day, Christmas, and Easter are just a few. But, do you know when Civil Rights Day is?
Civil Rights Day is celebrated in Arizona and New Hampshire on the third Monday of January, around the same time most states celebrate Martin Luther King Day, which is a federal holiday. This day is called Human Rights Day in Idaho, and the state of Florida celebrates this day with Robert E. Lee Day.
The field of Science has holidays as well. Darwin Day is held on February 12, which is the birthday of the honoree. October 23 (10-23) is Mole Day. Math celebrates Pi day on March 14 (3.14). The world of literature celebrates Dr. Suess Day on March 2. Of course, we cannot forget the retail holiday following Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday.
Some cultural holidays are Fat Tuesday, which is the last Tuesday before Lent and the opening day of Mardi Gras. Kwanza falls between December 26 and January 1. The Chinese New Year falls upon a different day each year in the month of January or February.
As mentioned before, the days we commemorate have significant historical or religious backgrounds. Is it not time to commemorate September 11, too? We should never forget our fellow brothers and sisters who were killed in acts of terrorism. We also need to appreciate those who have served our country in the fight against terrorism.
