Banned Books Week

By Julie Adams

Can you imagine a world without Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, The Giver by Lois Lowry, To Kill a Mockingbird, or the Harry Potter books? Banned Books Week is an annual celebration of our freedom to read by the American Library Association. TWC Library participated by hosting a “Read-Out” on September 25, 2014 during which faculty read aloud excerpts from books that censors have attempted to remove from our nation’s libraries’ shelves. Prizes were given to students who found banned books on our shelves and entered the drawing. The readers were Dr. David Duncan, Dr. Lori Waite, Dr. Elizabeth Ruleman, Dr. Patsy Ging, Kate Lewallen and Julie Adams. In addition, several recordings of authors reading from their works were played. Thank you to those who participated in this observance of our First Amendment rights and the role libraries play to preserve them.Ruleman, Waite, Ging, Adams
